Handmade Christmas Cabin at Tameside Christmas Market - Dec 2014

MWL Events hosted a pop up Christmas cabin at this year's Tameside Christmas Markets, held in Ashton under Lyne.  The markets ran from 28/11/14 until the 21/12/14 and the cabin played host to 16 different makers and food producers over the 3 week period.  There were 30 cabins in total at the markets, an ice-rink, bar and a stage.

Portland Basin Family Day & Handmade Market - 7th December 2014

Father Christmas was the VIP guest one again at the Portland Basin Christmas Family Day on the 7th December.  MWL Events hosted a Festive Handmde Market with stalls located around the museum and live music was provided by Colette Todd and St Paul's Brass Band.  The free entry event attracted around 1100 visitors throughout the day.

Stalybridge Handmade Market - 22nd November 2014

The final Stalybridge Handmade Market of 2014 took place on Saturday 22/11/14 and as expected attracted huge crowds.  From opening at 10am the queues started forming and the customers couldn't wait to see all the festive handmade gifts inside.  With the whole ground floor of the civic hall packed full of stalls there was a real buzz about the building.  Sale based singer Colette Todd kicked off the live musical performances in the main hall just after 10 followed by Willow Wood Choir and The Dollar Bombers.  The event has become more than just a craft market with local kids club Grow Happy Childcare providing kids craft activities and Gymetc, Stalybridge doing a sponsored row in aid of Reuben's Retreat.

Over the course of 18 months around 16,000 visitors have attended the markets increasing footfall, and boosting local economy, in this usually quiet town.  The shops that have opened in the town recently is evidence that the markets have made a difference.  What started as a community project for us is now a full time career and there are plans to move the markets around the Tameside and surrounding area and run them more regularly.

In 2014 the markets have raised £3000 for local charity Reuben's Retreat by charging a small admission fee.Saturdays market also raised money for Willow Wood Hospice.

Stalybridge Handmade Market - 18th October 2014

On the 18th October, just 3 weeks after the last one, the Stalybridge Handmade Market once again made the old market hall come alive with 60 handmade craft and food stalls!

It was another truly amazing turn out for this month's market which had a "spooktacular" theme and the 50p admission on the doors raised £430 for this years nominated charity Reuben's Retreat, taking the total so far to £2423.

Looking at the feedback forms the following day it's clear that the customers love it and some even asked for it to be bigger and to go on longer in the future!  With rumours of the Civic Hall being unavailable for 2015, MWL Events are busy scoping out new venues.

The last Stalybridge Handmade Market of the year will take place on the 22nd November at the Civic Hall from 10am until 3pm and promises to be a festive feast with a massive 80 stalls, live music and more.

Stalybridge Handmade Market - 27th September 2014

The 6th Stalybridge Handmade Market of 2014 took place on Saturday 27th September and people came in their droves.  From 10am when the doors opened right until closing at 3pm the market hall was buzzing.  With 60 stalls set out to tempt the customers, live music throughout the day from The Dollar Bombers and Colette Todd and kids craft activities provided by Gorse Hall Kids Club it really was a great day for all the family.  Saturday's market was the busiest so far this year and raised another £445 for Reuben's Retreat making the total raised so far this year almost £2000.

Saturday's market was the first of the markets where the stalls were handpicked from the hundreds of stalls that applied.  It's no easy job for the organisers but when one customer said she had goosebumps at seeing just how high the standard of stalls was this was music to the ears.

MWL Events are lucky to have some fabulous sponsors onboard including local cleaning company Fairy Sparkle Cleaning Ltd who have a shop in the town and also Slimming World who runs regular clubs in the Civic Hall.

The next Handmade Market will take place on the 18th October from 10am until 3pm at Stalybridge Civic Hall when another fantastic line up of talented artisans and food producers will be selling their wares.

Stalybridge Handmade Market - 19th July 2014

Stalybridge Handmade Market returned once again to the beautiful old market hall in the town last Saturday.  Despite the rain hundreds of people flocked to the market and many left carrying lots of bags of handmade goodies.

60 of the best handmade and local produce stalls were on display this time and live music played throughout the day from three local performers including singer and music student Stacy Southward from Hyde.  The theme for this month's market was butterflies and the giant tree sculptures left over from the War Horse production the week before made for a great backdrop.

The Civic Mayor of Tameside Councillor Dawson Lane and Mayoress Councillor Jackie Lane were in attendance at 11am to officially declare the market open and the Mayoress couldn't wait to start shopping.

The Handmade Market will return to Stalybridge Civic Hall on Saturday 27th September from 10am until 3pm.

Stalybridge Handmade Market - 14th June 2014

Stalybridge Handmade Market returned once again to the beautiful old market hall in the town.  The market, which has now been running for over a year, has consistently attracted over 1000 visitors each time and it's clear that the market is becoming a regular shopping trip for some customers.  Reuben's Retreat are the nominated charity this year and so far this year over £1200 has been donated from the 50p admission fee.  As usual included in the admission fee was was a prize draw to win a handmade hamper and one lucky lady from Carbrook was the chosen winner this month.

The theme for this month's market was "strawberry fever" and it was great that so many of the 65 stalls took part including local cafe Sara Dip N Tea who were at the market selling fresh strawberrries and cream alongside their tasty mediterranean food.  The Dollar Bombers and Rachel Swanick entertained the crowds with live music throughout the day and it was great to have Tameside Radio back at the market.

The market will return to the Civic Hall on Saturday 19th July from 10am until 3pm.

Haughton Green Bandstand Launch - 1st June 2014

MWL Events were recently asked to provide a craft marquee at the launch of the new bandstand in Haughton Green, which was an event organised by Irwell Valley Housing Association.  The event overall was a huge success with some fabulous musical performances taking place on the bandstand throughout the day.  The sun was shining and our craft marquee housed 15 of our regular traders and was a successful day for most.

This video of the event was made by Irwell Valley and we're proud to have been a part of such a fabulous day.

Stalybridge Handmade Market - 17th May 2014

The Stalybridge Handmade Market returned once more on the 17th May and was yet another roaring success with around 1000 visitors through the doors and the Civic Hall looked stunning in the sunshine.  As well as the 50 handmade craft and local produce stalls there was music throughout the day provided by violinist and music graduate Rachel Swanick as well as regular acoustic band The Dollar Bombers.  Willow Wood Choir also performed outside the hall in the afternoon which certainly drew in the crowds.  The market raised another £325 for Reuben's Retreat through admission on the door which leaves a total of £960 raised so far this year.  This market also took part in Love Your Local Market fortnight and ran a Best Dressed Stall Competition which was won by Stalybridge business Bexcraft.

As this market replaced the originally advertised Vintage at the Victoria market, which unforunately had to be cancelled, footfall was uncertain but it seemed the sunshine brought visitors out in their droves and it was the busiest market so far this year.

The Handmade Market will return on the 14th June at 10am with over 60 stalls including some regulars and some more new faces!

Portland Basin Family Day & Craft Market - 5th May 2014

On the 5th May Portland Basin Museum hosted their Bank Holiday Family Day and we were asked to provide a craft market, following on from the success of our combined Christmas event.  The day attracted a staggering 2600 visitors, smashing the museum's average footfall on a bank holiday by a 1000.

There were 25 craft and gift stalls around the museum, interactive kids craft activties, characters and also live music from Ashton based band The Dollar Bombers.  We ran a prize tombola on the day which raised over £85 for local charity Tameside4Good and the boat trips along the canal were popular as the weather stayed dry throughout the day.

This is the second event for us in partnership with the museum and plans are already in place for a combined Christmas Family Day to take place on the 7th December.

Stalybridge Handmade Market - 5th April 2014

The second Handmade Market of the year took place on Saturday 5th April, and with the additional rooms in the Civic Hall being utilised this time, the market was the biggest so far with around 75 stalls.  Once again the bunting was up and the stalls looks fabulous.  In order to raise funds for our chosen charity Reuben's Retreat there was a 50p admission charge on the door but this included the chance to win a fabulous handmade hamper made up of goodies from every stall.  Another £300 was raised on Saturday making the total so far at £635.  For the kids we had facepainting and also Tracey from Alice and Rose was running craft activities throughout the day.  Local musical duo The Dollar Bombers kept the crowds entertained and Tameside Radio were broadcasting live from the market once again.

Feedback gathered at the market shows that we're doing something right.  We're pleased to see returning visitors time after time and some had travelled as far as Nottingham. Word is definately spreading which is fantastic news!  With another 6 Handmade Markets planned for this year we're looking to add different elements to each one.  We're doing what we set out to achieve which is to attract people to our lovely market town and Stalybridge is now known for its local talent.  We're looking to expand the Handmade Market concept to other towns where we can make a difference.

The Handmade Market will return on the 14th June, with another 70+ stalls but in the meantime we'll be running a craft market at the Portland Basin Family Day on 5th May from 11am until 3pm and also our brand new event Vintage at the Victoria will be in the Civic Hall on the 17th May from 11am until 4pm.

Stalybridge Handmade Market - 1st March 2014

The first of 6 planned Handmade Markets for 2014 took place on 1st March 2014 in the Civic Hall and it was another huge success.  The market hall looked fabulous with over 50 stalls selling everything from woolly hats, jam, pies and photographs.  The market opened at 10am and slightly different to last year there was a 50p admission charge.  Included in the admission charge was a prize draw entry ticket giving everyone who entered the event the chance to win a fabulous handmade hamper made up of items from every stall.  All proceeds from door sales will be donated to Reuben's Retreat who are the nominated charity for 2014 and over £300 was raised on Saturday.  Jonathan Reynolds, the local MP for Stalybridge, popped in mid morning to officially open the event and musical entertainment was provided by local band The Dollar Bombers.

The ethos of the Handmade Market is to provide an event which will consistently bring lots of visitors to the town who wouldn't normally come.  Feedback gathered at the events tells us that visitors are repeatedly coming to every market and we're attracting visitors from as far away as Morecombe.  Overall the market seems to be a huge hit with the locals and we're improving them all the time.  It's exactly what Stalybridge needs and we seem to be making good progress letting people know that Stalybridge is indeed a fantastic place to visit.  There are so many great local businesses in the town who we like to support.  We've had a few requests to provide a cafe at the market but we feel this would go against what we're trying to do which is to share our visitors with the rest of the town.  We will however continue to have food stalls and refreshments at the market.

The next market takes place in just 5 weeks on the 5th April from 10am until 3pm and this one will be the biggest market yet with around 75 stalls!
